Airfield masterplanning for London Luton Airport
As part of the development of the new masterplan for London Luton Airport, Fjori was commissioned to be part of the masterplanning team with a focus on key airfield assets and their development through the masterplan period. The overall development plan includes £100m portfolio of projects that will increase the airport’s capacity to 18 million passengers a year.

- Development of preliminary engineering studies as part of the new masterplan
- Review of the capital development cost and budget profiling for all airfield elements
- Airfield development phasing review
- Preliminary engineering studies for airfield masterplan elements on challenging ground conditions
- Construction on historical landfill site
- Use of AutoCAD Civil 3D to accurately model vertical and horizontal alignments in order to assess feasibility of airfield development
- Use of WinDes (Mx) design software to determine surface water attenuation requirements arising from increased impermeable areas of airfield development components
- Independent assessment of masterplan budgets for all airfield development components
Fjori carried out preliminary engineering studies in order to develop robust budget estimates for airfield development elements. These studies included full geometric planning to ICAO standards and an assessment of key engineering constraints.
The work carried out by Fjori served to inform both the business case and the ultimate masterplan. Working in conjunction with other consultants, the project included the integration of specific airfield developments within the existing airfield and all necessary safeguarding.
